Total Traction With Power
At the heart of the 9-3X is Saabs cutting-edge XWD technology. It is an intelligent, active system that continuously distributes engine drive torque between the front and rear axles as required for optimum stability and traction in all conditions. To optimise traction the Saab XWD incorporates an innovative, pre-emptive engagement of the rear wheels. Unlike conventional all-wheel-drive systems, this eliminates the need to detect front wheel slip before rear drive is activated.

The hardware includes an electronically-controlled Torque Transfer Device (TTD), which varies power delivery between the axles. A valve increases or reduces hydraulic pressure on wet clutch plates inside the TTD to progressively engage or disengage the rear axle. The degree of slip dictates how much drive is transmitted to the rear wheels. The standard fit rear limited slip differential (eLSD) operates on the same principle, splitting drive across the axle to whichever wheel has more traction.

The 2.0 Turbo petrol engine, delivers a potent 210hp and thus conforms to Saabs right-sizing principal by producing the power of a larger engine but with the fuel economy and lower emission benefits of a smaller 2.0 litre capacity thanks to a turbo charger. This all-alloy engine also produces 221lb ft of torque (300Nm) between 2,500-4,000rpm and can accelerate the Saab 9-3X from 0 - 60 mph in just 8.2 seconds. Holden has Announced a raft of subtle exterior and interior updates for the 2012 Commodore family, Including new wheels, chrome highlights, interior tweaks and a pair of new color choices.

The new colors include the metallic chromatic teal Chlorophyll, the which Holden says is a response to the trend toward fashion-driven colors inspired by nature and environmental elements.

The second, a Nod to Holdens motorsport history, is dubbed Perfect Blue and enters the range as an homage to racing legend Peter Brock.

The new Holden Calais will receive no change, however, the Calais V-Series will now feature a lip spoiler mounted on the boot lid. Other visual changes for the new model include a chrome-trimmed front air dam section for the SV6 and SS variants, while the SS V-Series will get red stitching when ordered with the Redhot interior trim option. Redline versions, in sedan, wagon and ute forms, will all come with FE3 sports suspension.

Two new colours will be added to the options list for the new model: Perfect Blue and Chlorophyll teal green. Both new colours will be available across the range.

The outside of the 2012 Holden Commodore VE Series II SS V is mostly unchanged from the 2011 Commodore VE Series II SS V, except for new chrome inserts found around the grille, and a few other tiny changes that aren’t really that noticeable to be honest. The VE Commodore has always been a stern-looking Australian car, commanding respect with its hugely-flared front and rear wheel arches, making it appear to have a ‘I’ve got big shoulders’ type persona.

Carrying five adults isn’t ever really a problem when you have a Commodore. Front passengers will never complain about leg room (not even Andrew Bogut) and the rear ones will only have time to say, ‘ooh, this leather is nice’, and they too will then stretch out their legs. Same goes with the boot, it’ll fit the golf clubs, and even a few cases of beer to celebrate those always important backyard BBQs.
As far as the build quality goes, for the money you pay, you can sleep well knowing you’ve got your dollar’s worth. The latest 2012 Holden Commodore VE Series II SS V has also passed the newest and strictest ANCAP crash tests, and as a result holds a five-star safety rating, just for piece of mind.

2011 Hyundai Elantra

Hyundai has been on a roll of late, turning out the fantastic Genesis Sedan and Coupe, following up with the new 2011 Sonata, and today, unveiling the Avante, which will be known here in the U.S. as the 2011 Hyundai Elantra. The new Elantra wears a completely different look from its predecessor, and that‚Äôs a very good thing.

From its streamlined, almost tear-drop profile to its sculpted and space-age front end, the new Elantra picks up where the Sonata left off, but with an edgier overall presence that fits its younger target demographic. The lines that tie the hood into the front bumper, accentuating the headlights and grille in the process are particularly pleasing to our eye..

Along the side you‚Äôll see a character flare that‚Äôs reminiscent of the Sonata, and a rear-window finish that borrows a bit from the Genesis Coupe‚Äìboth well-used family traits that add a dash of both sport and luxury to the look. Moving around to the rear of the car, we see the flowing design process continued, with the side‚Äôs flares meshing neatly with the wraparound tail lights, and the curves from the bumper coming forward to mate with the flared rear fenders.

Just over a week ago, Hyundai released official images of the car‚Äôs interior, which similarly elevates the game in the inexpensive compact sedan market, pushing overall design and materials to levels reserved for luxury cars just a handful of years ago.

As always, we‚Äôll have to wait until we can get into a 2011 Elantra to give our first-hand take on the car, but based on the official imagery, we expect good things. Check out the video below for a quirkily-soundtracked video of the Korean-market version of the car.
